Pros & Cons

My stand on the topic of paparazzi is that the paparazzi is bad for Hollywood. They cause many problems for celebrities which are evident in my research. I am Pro that the paparazzi should be illegal.
There are many reasons that I have found to support my arguments. First and foremost, the celebrities are citizens of the United States just like everyone else. Each one of them deserves their civil right to privacy. This privacy is broken each time a photographer takes an unwanted picture of someone famous. Another problem with the paparazzi is safety. No celebrity feels safe when they live in L.A. Many celebrities have started to move to the East coast to get away from the demanding paparazzi. Some celebrities have even sued journalists and magazines because of their tactics to find pictures. Many celebrities have to hide their families from the public, because photographers will do anything to get a "family photo", especially if a new baby is born. paparazzi can also be life-threatening to celebrities; for example, Princess Diana and Lindsay Lohan. Because of the paparazzi citizens are not protected both physically, emotionally, and legally.
The con side has many arguments against my position. The public LOVES celebrity gossip. Admit it, you've read a People or Us Weekly magazine; everyone has. Tabloid magazines thrive off the public interest, and the public interest is one of the main reasons for these paparazzi problems. Photographers will sell their photographs to any magazine that will buy them. Legally, these photographers and magazines are protected by the First Amendment- freedom of the press and freedom of speech. People say that if you don't let the paparazzi do their job, you are not giving them the right to have a job and make their own choices. Because there are already laws in California, many anti-paparazzi advocates are trying to get a national law passed. This law would be very vague, and the vagueness would be too large to overcome. The public, the photographers, and the Constitution each protect paparazzi in their own way.
Based on my personal beliefs and my research I am taking the side that the paparazzi should leave the celebrities alone! Every person deserves their right to privacy and nobody should take that away from them, no matter what the circumstance.

Hey Simmy,

So my pros and cons are pretty much the same as yours, as I have found a lot of the same information. And I agree with all of these points. I too am supporting the side that celebrities are being invaded, and we have good reason to believe that. As far as the con side, I do have to admit that I am obsessed with celebrity gossip, and that is one of the reasons I chose this topic. But as much as I loved it, it's not fair to the celebs.

I think this topic really interesting. In a celebrity obsessed world, people will do anything for a snapshot. As much as we love to hear all the 'juice' and gossip, celebrities are really just people who got famous from doing their jobs, if you think about it. From a certain point I can understand that the paparazzi are just trying to do their job, but enough's enough.
